CAN TECHNOLOGY REPLACE HUMANS?
By Zara Zamani, Head of Disruptive Technologies
Fear of digital transformation eliminating humans and taking their jobs is undeniable. Many leaders are resistant to digital transformation as they have not yet managed to find a human element in it. However, there are some other perspectives that we can take into consideration as well:
Technology will NOT take human jobs, it will create jobs for us. New technologies create new products and services and so new jobs. Based on OECD evidence, in the future 65% of our children will work on activities that do not exist today.
Automation supports career development. It provides the opportunity for workers to adopt adaptive instead of static thinking, learn new skills and develop their career.Just like what happened by introducing ATM machines and checkout scanners in USA, automation not only didn't take jobs away but boosted employment in bank branches and retail stores.
Automation keeps jobs for local employees. As competitiveness rises with automation, less jobs are offshored to locations with lower labor costs and more jobs are left for local employees. Just like what has happened in the German manufacturing sector.
Digital transformation supports human beings and pushes them to grow, not to eliminate them.
Any digital transformation that has caused people to lose jobs and not created new jobs instead is certainly a failure today!
